Good morning all,

Yesterday didn't go as planned with Primoz a never nearer 7th. He ran really flat and right from the off I knew he wasn't on a going day. However, even though the winner featured on the shortlist, he was never in my thoughts - I have no complaints other than I got it wrong. But don't look back in anger (I hear you say...)

Onwards to Day 2 (Friday) and I'm going to look at another big handicap of the day, The Orrell Park - now snazzily named the William Hill Handicap Hurdle (2:20 at Aintree).

The key stat with this race is weight - with no horse carrying over 11 stone 5 winning in recent years. With this stat alone we can therefore eliminate Beacon Edge, Impose Toi, Steel Ally, Hansard, Western Walk, Favour and Fortune and Be Aware - that's a third of the field of 21 gone in one large swoop!

Similarly, 128 is the lowest rated horse to win this in the last 10 renewals - and that was a major surprise - so the horses with less class at the bottom of the weights (Wellington Arch, Blenkinsop, Tune In a Box, Helnwein, Listentoyourheart and Tintintin) I'm discarding. I've kept in everything from 128 and above. It does seem that the overall depth of this renewal (from a ratings perspective) is lower than previous years, otherwise I would use 130 as the benchmark as this seems to be the norm.

Off the Jury has never won a hurdles race and this would set a precedent here, so it would be a surprise to see him break his duck today. My judgement is to banish him.

This leaves us with no fewer than 7 contenders as our shortlist to take a closer look at.

Kopeck De Mee is the Mullins hype horse that literally could be anything. He was poor at Cheltenham and hasn't done enough for me.

Wade Out is a progressive sort but has no experience in a big runner handicap.

Serious Operator has been off the track since finishing down the field in this race last year , I can't keep him in as there are too many negative variables.

Ike Sport's recent form has been worrying and I just can't see him being up to scratch today and it's a similar story for Minella Missile, who doesn't seem to even want to finish a race nowadays.

So, I think this one is between Wreckless Eric and GIN COCO (priced in places at 50/1 as I write this, 6 places freely available) and I'm going to plump for the latter, with a possible saver on the former.

He's a lightly raced 9 year old who is significantly stepped up in trip, which I'm hoping will suit him. He runs better when he's fresh and will benefit from the drying ground at Aintree.

He could be an each-way play at a big price.

Be Aware caught the eye in the Coral Cup where he travelled strongly before weakening late on – suggesting the drop back to this slightly shorter trip and a flat track might play to his strengths. He’s got a touch of class and with conditions in his favour, he can bounce back.

Wreckless Eric looked unlucky in the Imperial Cup where he was repeatedly denied a clear run. He hit the line strongly and steps up in trip here, which should suit. With that bit of extra luck, he’s more than capable of landing a prize like this.

Romeo Coolio ran a stormer in the Supreme Novices’, racing prominently in a race that turned into a test of stamina. That looked a top renewal, and he stuck on admirably for third. With no superstars to contend with this time and back on a flat track, he sets the standard. If the Cheltenham effort hasn’t left a mark, he’s the one to beat.

James Du Berlais was narrowly denied in this race last year and lines up just 1lb higher. He’s had a solid campaign without everything falling right and comes into this fresher than most. Expect a bold showing again over these fences.

Amirite is a strong-travelling type who’s shaped well in several big-field handicaps. His fourth behind Hewick last time was a fine prep, and he has the cruising speed to get into this. He’s lightly raced over fences and could go close with Rachel Blackmore in the saddle.

Afadil looked all over the winner in the Imperial Cup before fading late – a trait we’ve seen before. The faster ground and addition of cheekpieces might be just the tweak he needs to see it out properly.

Jack Hyde comes in off the back of two dominant wins in lower company. He looks to be improving fast, and with just 10st to carry, this has clearly been the plan for a while. He’ll relish a strong gallop and goes here fresh and confident.
