NEW TRIAL - HORSEPLAYS
1:20 - Aintree - BILL JOYCE - 1pt E/W (best priced 9/1)
7:15 - Wolverhampton - BACK FROM DUBAI - 1 pt E/W (priced in places at 12/1)
Grand National 4:00 - Aintree
PERCEVAL LEGALLOIS (1pt E/W) and BEAUPORT (1pt E/W)
Well, when you are struggling to even get a horse in the first ten, it's not a particularly enjoyable experience is it?
Gin Coco ran terribly on Friday and again, there are no excuses - it was just a misjudged selection. It can't get any worse but it certainly doesn't get any easier.
Joking aside, racing is always full of
many ups and downs.
We just need to try to make amends today (Saturday) , when attempting to solve none other than the Grand National (Aintree, 4:00) riddle itself, by using known winning variables to gradually whittle down the contenders for the biggest prize in National Hunt racing.
We will start with a field of 34 and eliminate them one by
one, to see if we can get a selection that at least gives us a run for our money in the big one!
Did you know that other than the late , great Many Clouds (who had a heart as big as the Moon), no horse has won the race shouldering more than 11 stone 6 in recent times? Even Tiger Roll only carried 11 stone 5 for his second win. This fact means that I'm happy to eliminate the reigning champion I Am Maximus, as well as Royale Pagaille, Nick Rockett, Grangeclare
West and the former King George winner Hewick.
The last few years have also been dominated by 7-9 year olds. So teenager Celebre d'Allen, Minella Indo, Ida's Boy, Conflated, Chantry House, Appreciate It, Vanillier, Twig, Threeunderthrufive, Coko Beach and perhaps the world's most overrated racehorse Bravemansgame, are all too old for this - according to the stats anyway!
That's 16 down already - with 18 still remaining upright.
I'm looking for something with at least 9 chase runs, because other than surprise winner Noble Yeats in 2022, recent winners have all had at least this much experience under their saddle - Hyland, Senior Chief, Three Card Brag, Stay Away Fay and Iroko all fall short at this fence.
For proven stamina (the Grand National is a marathon, not a Snickers after all) I want to see evidence of at least 5 runs over a distance of 3 miles or more. Fil Dor, Intense Raffles, Kandoo Kid, Hitman and Horantzua d'Airy (easy for you to say) are relatively unproven, it's therefore my assessment that they don't have enough VaVaVoom in their locker and can walk out the door, because they're not welcome anymore...
This leaves us with no fewer than 8 (EIGHT) on the shortlist - Minella Cocooner, Stumptown, Beauport, Perceval Legallois, Broadway Boy, Meetingofthewaters, Monbeg Genius and Duffle Coat.
The problem I have with Stumptown is that I think he will be too far behind the early pace to do his usual of picking up the pieces late on and for that reason, I don't think the race will suit
him.
Monbeg Genius is more of a soft ground horse when he's seen at his best - and he needs to be at his best for this.
Broadway Boy's form has been disappointing this year and I just don't envisage a miraculous recovery.
Meetingofthewaters didn't quite get the trip last year - fading at
the death - however you could make a decent argument that he would fare better this time with the improved ground conditions. It's therefore a tough percentage call to look elsewhere.
I just don't think Minella Cocooner is well handicapped.
Deciding from the last three (Beauport, Duffle Coat and Perceval Legallois) has been the most difficult choice. I've
decided to go with two -
BEAUPORT (best price 28/1 as I write this, 6 places available) who is in top form and won the Midlands National last year , so you know he'll get this trip and...
PERCEVAL LEGALLOIS (priced in places at 12/1 at the moment) who will be fully primed by the shrewd Gold Cup winning trainer Gavin Cromwell and it's interesting that he didn't enter his
champion into this race. I may just have a sneaky Exacta too.
Make sure you get your bets on early, as the bookies will reduce most of the prices just before the off, as they do every year.
Good luck today and thank you for reading.
