1:50pm Newbury – Shutupshirley (Each-Way)
SHUTUPSHIRLEY returned from a 756-day absence with a dominant 11-length success over 3m 2f
at Fontwell on Boxing Day. Given over six weeks to recover, he could improve again despite an 8lb rise in the weights.
He’s now won three on the bounce when stepped up beyond 2m 4f, and stamina will be key in these conditions. Magical King is a threat, but this staying hurdler is progressive.
Recommendation:
Shutupshirley – 0.5 pts e/w
2:25pm Newbury – Bravemansgame
This is a weaker than usual renewal of the Grade 2 Denman Chase, and BRAVEMANSGAME should have too much class if bouncing back.
His King George run was poor, but he wasn’t over his Betfair Chase effort, and he’s been poorly
campaigned at times. The race conditions suit him perfectly, and with no standout rival, his 9/4 price is too big.
Recommendation: Bravemansgame – 1 pt win
3:00pm Newbury – Libberty Hunter
Edwardstone is the one to beat, but Matata and Libberty Hunter are closely
matched from their Cheltenham clash on New Year’s Day.
Matata impressed at Windsor, but LIBBERTY HUNTER still holds a verdict over him and gets 6lbs from Edwardstone. If Adam Wedge keeps him close to the pace, he can take advantage of his progressive profile.
Recommendation: Libberty Hunter – 1 pt
win
3:35pm Newbury – Joyeuse (Each-Way)
A JP McManus-owned, Nicky Henderson-trained mare who travelled strongly in a hot Cheltenham handicap, JOYEUSE should be well-suited by this strongly run race.
That Cheltenham form has been boosted by the Grade 2 success of the
third, and she’s 4lbs well-in here. The extra pace should suit, and she looks a solid each-way bet.
Recommendation: Joyeuse – 0.5 pts e/w
4:10pm Newbury – Lord Of Thunder (Each-Way) (NAP)
LORD OF THUNDER was runner-up in the Grade 2 Towton, finishing behind subsequent Grade 1
winner Handstands. Despite being hampered in the back straight, he stayed on well and shaped like a strong stayer.
Joe Tizzard’s yard remains in top form, and this represents a drop in class. A 5lbs rise for Herakles Westwood makes him vulnerable, and Lord Of Thunder looks the bet.
Recommendation: Lord Of Thunder
– 0.5 pts e/w (NAP)
2:48pm Uttoxeter – Hunter Legend
Brave Kingdom will be popular for Nicholls, but HUNTER LEGEND was too good for Westerninthepark last time and looks well-handicapped despite a 5lb rise.
The step up to 3m could unlock further improvement, and Ned Fox’s 3lb claim
gives him a big chance receiving weight from the principles.
Recommendation: Hunter Legend – 1 pt win
